Gauteng Sport Awards 2017 category renamed

The Most Promising Athlete category has been renamed The RandWest Most Promising  Athlete.

The category was previously announced as Most Promising Athlete, but now is sponsored by the RandWest City. ‘Investing in the youth and the future of sport is a priority to us the people of RandWest and we are proud to be associated with the RandWest Most Promising Athlete category,’ remarked mayor of RandWest Mzi Khumalo.

RandWest is proud to be home of legendary sportsmen like Peter Terror Mathebula, Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe, Joseph Banks Setlhodi, Donald Ace Khuse, Bobang Phiri, Alladin Mean Machine Stevens, Jan Kid Gavilan Bergman, Simon Ramoni, Moses Somo and Steve Rampai.

Added Khumalo: ‘It only makes sense that we would be backing the RandWest Most Promising Athlete category because it’s important to spot young talent and groom it for tomorrow’s legends as we have done in the past.’

The nominees in the RandWest Most Promising Athlete are:

  • Madimetja Malebana – Wits Sport – Combat Tang Soo Do
  • Nthabeleng Maine – Wits Hockey – Hockey U/21 World Cup Women’s Hockey
  • Sheldon Thomas – UJ Sport for Disability - Athletics
  • Siyabonga Samkelo Wiseman Mbatha – Gauteng Volleyball Union – Volleyball
