Gauteng Sport and Recreation on Gauteng school holiday programme

Holiday programme to keep Gauteng’s youth active

Following the end of the 2017 academic year, scores of young people (and their parents) across the province will be glad to know that they wouldn’t have to sit around at home or street corners looking for things to do and places to go.

This is as the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation rolls out the school holiday programme throughout the province. From the 8th of December 2017 to the 14th of January 2018 young people can visit the various recreation centers within their communities and be part of the programme including dance, theatre, film/movie showcasing, reading, games, sports and more.

During the unveiling of the programme by MEC Faith Mazibuko flanked by Sport and Recreation MMCs in the 5 Municipalities last Friday, they undertook to make this an annual programme.

“We want to turn the holiday programme into one of the department’s mass participation flagships that allow children from all walks of life to be participate in. Children should not be left to themselves nor to the streets”.

“We want to see every child especially those with less resources to travel anywhere for the holidays taking part in the progamme and learn new interest and find new friends. This is not only about keeping them busy but about improving their physical and emotional wellbeing and encouraging positive identity, especially against risky behaviors”, said MEC Mazibuko.

The programmes will be happening daily from between 9am and 2pm.

“Because some children are unable to participate in school extramural activities including sport and the arts due to transport challenges, we also hope to use this initiative to identify talented youngsters that can go on to benefit from the department’s other programmes”, concluded the MEC Mazibuko.
