Gauteng Safety to recall 427 000 unlicensed vehicle

The Gauteng Departments of Safety and Security and public transport will recall 427,000 unlicensed vehicles in the province, safety and security MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu said on Thursday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg, Mosunkutu said an e-Natis audit showed that of the 3,8 million vehicles on the province's roads, 427,000 are unlicensed.

"This figure includes vehicles whose roadworthy licences are in arrears," said Mosunkutu.

"Whilst we contemplate culprits as defaulters with the credit bureau, we urge defaulting motorists to contact us for assistance."

The department had set up call lines to assist motorists who suspected they might be in arrears. Motorists can call 011 689 3791 or 011 689 3636 or visit the departmental websites to see whether their vehicles are licensed.

The department planned to send out letters informing motorists their vehicles would be recalled. Motorists would then have to pay the relevant licensing fees and their cars would have to undergo a new roadworthy test.
