Gauteng Roads and Transport on improving R558 Road Corridor

Gauteng Roads Department Improves R558 Road Corridor

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, has reported that significant road maintenance work is currently underway on the R588 between Lenasia and Finetown-Ennerdale.

“Sections of the R558 are being rehabilitated due to the high traffic volumes on the road and the growing need for improved safety measure along the southern corridor,” said Vadi.

He added that portions of the road had degraded over time with the regular incidence of potholes near the Trade Route Mall, the Ahmed Kathrada Lenmed Hospital and the Total Garage.

Vadi said that the routine maintenance works include the following:

  •  cleaning of drains;
  • installation of new road signage and road studs;
  • grass cutting and cleaning;
  • installation of guardrails near Lenasia South;
  • potholes and road shoulder repairs; and
  •  the milling and resurfacing of severely degraded portions of the road.

In addition, there has been an improvement in road markings and the introduction of compulsory stop signs, particularly at intersections near Naren’s Farm and Daxina Clinic, as road safety measures.

“These measures are necessary to improve road safety on what is now an extremely busy road,” emphasized Vadi.

He appealed to motorists to exercise patience and extra care while the maintenance work is in progress as there will be extraordinary traffic control measures in place. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly for any delays in travel times.

The road maintenance work is scheduled to be completed in October.
