Gauteng Premier saddened by passing of former educator, community builder and football administrator, Dr Leepile Taunyane

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has lauded the late educator, teacher unionist and football administrator, Dr Leepile Taunyane, for his immense contribution to the creation of a better Gauteng.

Taunyane, 85, passed away yesterday having been admitted to hospital over the weekend.

"Ntate Taunyane was not only a teacher to many; he was also a patriot and humble leader of the people. He lived in his beloved Alexandra all his life and remained committed to the upliftment of the area until his last breath," Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane said.

Taunyane, who was the Life President of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), also wore many other caps in his long and fruitful careers in teaching and football.

"We honoured Ntate Taunyane with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gauteng Sports Awards in 2012 as we recognised the critical role he played in building our communities through education and sport," Mokonyane said.

Taunyane was one of the people credited with setting up the current PSL, which is currently one of the top ten best run leagues in the world.

"The people of this province will miss Ntate Taunyane's hardwork and dedication in all that he did. We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ntate Taunyane.

"May his soul rest in peace," said Mokonyane.

Details of his funeral have not yet been communicated.
