Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, has noted with concern the violent attacks and the looting of shops owned by foreign nationals in Duduza in the Ekurhuleni Metro.
“We strongly condemn violence on foreign nationals as we equally condemn violence on South Africans,” said Mokonyane.
This after hundreds of foreign traders in the area were forced to close down their shops after alleged xenophobic attacks.
Mokonyane said the Gauteng Provincial Government would do all in its power to ensure that any form of violence was rooted out and citizens of Duduza lived without fear of being attacked.
More than 10 shops were looted in the area on Tuesday evening, while scores of foreign businessmen were injured. Premier Mokonyane has called on law enforcement agencies, especially the police, to play their part in restoring normalcy in the area.
“We take note of the allegations levelled against the police on this matter and we will act on those where evidence is provided,” said Mokonyane.
In addition, Mokonyane called for tolerance among various diverse cultures in the melting that is the Gauteng province.
