Gauteng Education MEC Ms Barbara Creecy wishes to thank educators, parents, school governing bodies, civil society organisations, communities and the public for supporting the 2010 matric class affected by the industrial action.
The preliminary examinations in Gauteng were an overwhelming success. Your support and selfless dedication has made it possible for the 2010 matric class to write prelim examinations over the last two weeks.
The MEC especially thanks the matric class of 2010 whose passion and dedication saw them rise above the challenges, establish self-study groups and write their prelim examinations. Prelim examinations are important to prepare learners for the final examinations. They also form part of the 25% School Based Assessment (SBA) mark - with the preliminary examination contributing up to seven percent of the total SBA mark.
The examinations in Gauteng started on 14 September 2010 for those schools affected by industrial action and were concluded for the vast majority of schools today (23 September 2010). Those schools that had not been affected by the industrial action were given permission to start with their examinations much earlier.
Of the 15 districts in Gauteng, five districts experienced minor disruptions which were swiftly addressed. Only four schools are left with no more than two papers to be written on Monday.
The final matric examinations will start in less than a month. The GDE has organised 93 camps for grade 12 learners starting from Monday 27 September 2010 until 18 October 2010. These classes will focus on curriculum completion, revision, and exam preparation techniques.
The GDE calls on learners, parents, educators, communities and all education stakeholders to unite around a common objective of saving our matrics. Learners are encouraged to also use study guides available from various newspapers and also on www.thutong.doe.gov.za.
The GDE is committed to ensuring that every learner does well at school and leaves our institutions with the values, knowledge, skills and qualifications that will give them the best chance of success in adult life.
