Gauteng Legislature calls for unity in fight against violence perpetuated towards women and children

Committee calls for unity in the fight against violence perpetuated towards women and children

As the country officially kicks starts the 16 days of Activism for no violence against women and children, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has called on every South African to join hands and collaborate in eradicating the scourge of violence perpetuated against women and children.

The Committee has made a clarion call to government institutions, civil organizations, faith-based organizations, unions and business to take the lead in this campaign and use their influence in society to spread messages that will ultimately lead to the prevention and elimination of violence against women and children.

The Committee further called on society to protect and support victims of violence and called on survivors of violence to make use of victim empowerment centers across the Province established to empower victims to deal with the impact and consequences of incidents they have experienced and suffer no further victimization.

In support of this global initiative, the Committee encourages positive conversations and interactions particularly amongst men and boys that will increase awareness and galvanize society to stand against all forms of violence and the killing of women and children.

The launch of this campaign today, creates and opportunity for South Africans to remind each other of the daily responsibilities we have, to root out violence against women, children and all other vulnerable groups in our society.  This campaign should not just end after 16 days but, must extend to 365 days.
