Gauteng Health on primary healthcare facilities damaged due to heavy storms

Health services continue as normal amidst damage to facilities in Tshwane by heavy storms

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) wishes to inform the public, particularly in Tshwane, that Odi District Hospital in Mabopane and three other primary healthcare facilities have experienced extensive damages due to a storm that happened overnight on Tuesday, 19 December 2023.

Fortunately, no patient or staff members at these facilities were injured as a result of the damages caused by the storm. Albeit these circumstances, communities are advised that health services continue as normal.

The extent of the damage at Odi include a collapsed ceiling in one of the sections of the hospital and the roof, which has caused leakages in some wards. Part of the hospital’s palisade fence has also been damaged due to the heavy storm.

The primary healthcare facilities include Sedilega Clinic in Mabopane, Block TT Clinic and KT Mutubatse Clinic which are both in Soshanguve.

The extent of the damage at all these three facilities include damage to the roof and ceiling, which has resulted in the wards being waterlogged.

As a result of the storm, the dysfunctional storm water channels are also flooding the clinics.

The GDoH has since this morning, Wednesday, 20 December dispatched officials from the Infrastructure Unit in the Department to assess the damage in order to institute immediate measures to ensure that health services do not get affected further.

Due to the weather forecast predicting more heavy rains this afternoon, it is difficult to estimate timelines to refurbish the facilities.

However, the GDoH is committed to ensuring that contractors are deployed to these facilities from today (Wednesday) to commence with further damage assessments which will inform the scope of the refurbishments.
