Gauteng Health helps patient exchange vows in hospital ward

Determined couple defy odds and exchange vows in a hospital ward

The words of journalist, novelist and political philosopher William Godwin who said, “Love conquers all difficulties, surmounts all obstacles, and effects what to any other power would be impossible,” could not ring more truer than in the story of Godfrey Maboi (49) and Paulinah Mogale (44) who exchanged vows in a private ceremony within the walls of Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) on Sunday evening (10 December).

When a car accident on 02 December 2023 resulted in the hospitalisation of Godfrey this threatened to prolong the couple’s long-awaited wedding day. However, their steadfast love and commitment triumphed as they finally tied the knot on Sunday in the hospital ward where the groom is currently admitted.

Hailing from Daveyton, the couple’s love story spans an impressive 28 years, and their journey to the altar gained momentum in December 2022 when they got engaged.

With their wedding day scheduled for 10 December 2023, the couple encountered an unexpected hurdle after the car accident that left the groom bed ridden. However, their determination to honour their commitment to one another remained unshakable. When the couple shared their wedding plans with the staff and recognising the significance of the occasion, the hospital management allowed the wedding ceremony to take place in the ward where Godfrey is receiving care.

Accompanied by their pastor, the bride and groom exchanged their vows on Sunday evening, surrounded by the love and support of the FERH staff and their families who joined virtually through video calls. This gesture by Far East Rand Hospital not only provided solace and joy to Godfrey and Paulinah but also showcased the dedication of the hospital staff in fostering an environment of
compassion and understanding.

The MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko congratulated the newlywed couple and wished them well in their marriage saying that their story is an inspiration to many that irrespective of the obstacles one encounters in life there is always a way.

She further commended the management and staff of Far East Rand Hospital for their exceptional support and sensitivity in ensuring that this memorable day was not overshadowed by the groom's hospitalisation.

“Their commitment to patient-centred care and their willingness to accommodate this significant life event is testament to the outstanding professionalism and humanity within the healthcare profession. It aligns with the culture of service we are trying to foster across all public health facilities,” stated MEC NkomoRalehoko.

The Gauteng Department of Health joins the families, friends, and loved ones of Godfrey and Paulinah in celebrating their union and wishes them a lifetime of happiness, love, and prosperity.
