Gauteng Health condemns burning of clinics in Tembisa

The Gauteng Department of Health condemns, in the strongest terms, the burning of public facilities including clinics by protesting community members.

This morning a clinic in Finetown, Johannesburg, was partially burnt down after a group of youngsters entered the facility, poured petrol and set the clinic alight. Nurses and patients were inside and fortunately escaped the clinic unharmed. One critical patient was transferred to the nearest clinic for further treatment.

Yesterday; a clinic, together with 11 vehicles that were parked inside the premises, was burnt down and shops looted during a protest in Winnie Mandela, Tembisa.

Primary healthcare facilities provide the first point of call for the majority of poor people who cannot afford private healthcare, said the department.
