Gauteng Government on illegal invasions in Lawley Ext 4 and Ennerdale Ext 6

Illegal invasions to stop immediately in the south of Johannesburg

All the illegal land invasions by residents of Lawley Ext 4 and Ennerdale Ext 6 in the south of Johannesburg must stop with immediate effect. This emerged today at the meeting and handing over of memorandum to City of Johannesburg MMC of Housing Dan Bovu.

Earlier in the weekend residents started to cut stands for themselves and tried to illegally use those stands to erect shacks. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department moved in swiftly to curb the invasion. The south of Johannesburg has experienced one of the largest land grabs in the province, with some individuals and syndicates stealing government, build houses illegally and selling the houses to residents.

“We have explained to the residents of both Ennerdale and Lawley that we have plans in place to develop these areas in order to ease the burden of housing. One of the hold ups is the connection to water and sewage and once that is resolved, the construction of houses will begin”, said Bovu.

Human Settlements MEC Ntombi Mekgwe condemned the opportunists’ elements that are trying to destabilise Gauteng in the run up to the elections. “The spate of service delivery protests in Gauteng has declined significantly as a result of strengthened engagements with the communities. Inciting people to illegally invade land is grossly irresponsible and demonstrates lack of leadership”, said MEC Mekgwe.

Mekgwe also condemned the burning of a councillor’s house in Tembisa at the weekend.
