The Gauteng Provincial Government will implement strict traffic management measures to ease the flow of traffic to stadiums on scheduled world cup matches. The provincial government on Tuesday, 15 June 2010, met with FIFA and the Organising Committee to discuss concerns about traffic congestion on match days.
Both parties agreed that stricter traffic management measures should be enforced to ease traffic flow for the remainder of the World Cup period. Traffic congestion is caused mainly by fans using private vehicles to travel to stadiums.
Government urges all fans with match tickets to use public transport to travel to and from the stadiums in Gauteng. Trains, busses and minibus taxies are available to transport fans on time and safely. Fans can also park their cars at dedicated park and ride facilities.
Private vehicles, except those transporting VIPs, FIFA family and officials will not be allowed anywhere near stadiums on match days.
Certain roads around stadiums will be closed for public use four hours before kick-off.
The police and traffic law enforcement agencies will be deployed at key traffic points and will act firmly to enforce the world cup traffic management regulations.
