Gauteng Department of Education dismisses four educators for sexual misconduct

The Gauteng Department of Education has concluded disciplinary hearings against three educators at Filadelfia Secondary School who were accused of sexual misconduct against a learner.

The department received information that nine staff members at the school, four educators and five general staff, were involved in sexual misconduct against learners.

Three educators were found guilty and have been dismissed. They have until the end of this week to appeal to the Gauteng Education MEC against their conviction and dismissal.

The other educator resigned before the case against him could be concluded. He was dismissed in terms of provisions in the Employment of Educators Act.

All these cases have been referred to the South African Council of Educators (SACE) for further action.

The disciplinary hearing of the four staff members who were allegedly involved in sexual misconduct is currently underway.

The department would like to send a strong message that there is no place for any inappropriate behavior towards learners in Gauteng schools and we will not tolerate sexual misconduct against learners.

The department is committed to ensuring that every learner does well at school and leaves our institutions with the values, knowledge, skills and qualifications that will give them the best chance of success in adult life.
