Gauteng Department of Community Safety welcomes new MEC: Elias Khabisi Mosunkutu

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety welcomes the newly appointed MEC, Elias Khabisi Mosunkutu, formerly with the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment.

His appointment was announced by the new and first female Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane when she unveiled the new Members of the Executive Council (MECs) on Friday, 8 May 2009 at the Gauteng Legislature.

The announcement of the new provincial cabinet brought some changes within the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), a number of new faces while others were shifted from one department to another. Former Community Safety MEC, Firoz Cachalia was moved to the new Economic Development Department while Local Government Department has been merged with the Housing Department and will be headed by former Social Development MEC Kgaogelo Lekgoro. The Department of Education (DoE) will be headed by former Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Barbara Creecy.

The new Department for Agriculture and Rural Development will be headed by Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko. Road and Transport will be in the hands of new MEC, Bheki Nkosi, while Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will be headed by another new MEC, Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkhulu.

Premier Mokonyane also announced the new Planning Commission that will report to the Office of Premier. This powerful body will oversee medium to long-term planning and organisation headed by former transport MEC, Ignatius Jacobs, who serves as the special advisor to the Premier.
