Gauteng Carnival scoops Gold at International Awards

Gauteng Carnival has won Gold at the 2013 International Liveable Communities (Livcom) Awards. The announcement was made yesterday from China where the awards were held.

The prominent award was conferred to this provincial flagship project for its socio economic impact element in the people of Gauteng. It was adjudged ‘a great project that has expanded the simple idea of a parade into a year
round programme involving all communities, training individuals and creating new opportunities, pride and social cohesion’.

In its 9 years of existence Carnival has trained and created employment for thousands of budding artists including, designers, choreographers, leaners and seamstresses. One of its successful products is the DJ’s programme which has created opportunities for developing djs. The winner here walks away with R50 000 worth of dj equipment to launch their career to new heights. 

It also continues to bring together different communities across the different cultures of South Africa including featuring international troupes from the African continent and across the world including as far as China and Trinidad and Tobago.

Meanwhile, it’s all systems go for the 2013 edition of the Gauteng Carnival to be held this coming weekend at the Johannesburg Stadium.

Saturday is the unveiling of costumes and floats starting at 6pm and Sunday is the big street carnival featuring over 20 000 participants including hundreds of high performance cars and bikers starting at 12pm.

About the awards:

The LivCom Awards were launched in 1997 and is the World’s only Awards Competition focusing on International Best Practice regarding
the management of the local environment. The objective of LivCom is to develop and share International Best Practice, with the further objective of
improving the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of ‘liveable communities’. Since 2007 UNEP has collaborated with the LivCom Awards,
when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two Organisations
