Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation's colourful and vibrant project, Gauteng Carnival has been nominated for the Liveable Communities (LivCom) Socio-Economic Project Award in China.

The category is aimed at rewarding projects that have had impact on the socioeconomic conditions of communities they serve.

An excited and proud MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile said; “This nomination means a lot to Gauteng and the department, it confirms that the Gauteng Carnival is more than just street parade and entertainment but a well thought programme to promote social cohesion, create jobs, transfer skills and thereby empower the community”.

Since its inception in 2005, the Gauteng Carnival, also known as Pale Ya Rona has been about telling stories of the diverse communities of Gauteng through arts in the form of dance, music, costume and float designs.

“It is an honour to be nominated because it shows that Gauteng Carnival is reaching international recognition and will compete against the best in the world,” added MEC Maile.
