Free State Roads and Transport on road accidents

Condolence message to road accident victims

We are extremely saddened at the loss of innocent lives in yet another horrible road accident on Sunday 19 January 2014 on the R705 near Jacobsdal in the Xhariep District.

Five people died at about 19:55 on Sunday when two vehicles collided about 13 km outside Jacobsdal on the R705 route to Kimberley. It is alleged that a Peugeot sedan overtook a vehicle at a blind spot and collided with a bakkie. Both vehicles overturned and landed on the side of the road. The driver of the bakkie and four people travelling in the sedan died on the scene. In another accident today at about 10h50, two people died and nine were injured when the bakkie they were travelling with lost control and overturned on a gravel road between Reddersburg and Dewetsdorp.

On behalf of the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, Honourable Butana Komphela, and the people of the Free State I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families for this tragic and untimely loss of lives. Our thoughts are also with the victims of these two tragic accidents and we wish speedy recovery to those who were injured.

Our law enforcement agencies will continue to work closely with all road users to ensure that road rules and regulations are observed at all times in order to make our roads safer.
