DESTEA teaches them to care about environment whilst still young

The past weekend was filled with excitement, fun and learning for 15 finalists’ schools that participated in Enviro Quiz 2022 that took place in Gariep Forever Resort. This year, 156 schools across the province with a total of 4864 learners participated and improved their knowledge about environmental and waste management and went  further to teach others about this important topic.

Enviro Quiz 2022 happened under the theme Paper waste…does it really matter? On its 29th year, Enviro Quiz Programme aims to work towards a clean, green, healthy, and more sustainable environment; to teach grade 6 learners to think critically about their environment, and encourage participation to solve some of the environmental problems in their respective schools’ environment as well as assist teachers with environmental activities in the grade 6 syllabus.

The event took place over 2 days from the 21st to 22nd October 2022 and both days were filled with activities designed specifically to bring the best of all participants and increase their understanding of the environment and waste management. There were 4 assignments that the finalists had to partake in; making of mache bowl, presentation about recycling, games and composing and demonstrating a song.

The programme, which has become very popular amongst schools comprised of activities that have environmental impact on developing skills, confidence, critical thinking and problem solving.

Talking during Prize Giving Function to welcome guests and give a message of support and encouragement to learners and teachers; Chief Director for Environmental Management Ms Nozi Nkoe said that all those who participated in Destea Enviro Quiz 2022 are winners.

A panel of judges represented by all relevant stakeholders worked hard without any biasness in deciding on the winners. After adjudication, Setshabelo Primary School were announce winners for both the best project and the best song. The top 5 of the 15 schools` finalists from number one to five are; Hoerskool Hopstad, St Andrews Primary, Eunice Primary, Vredefort Primary and Setshabelo Primary respectively. The best learner for Enviro Quiz 2022 was scooped by B Matlakala from Donges Primary School.

According to judges through one of them; Mrs Mpolokeng Mokalobe, deciding on the winners was not an easy task because the competition was very tight as the products of assignments were of very high quality.

All stakeholders agreed that partnership between government and private sector is key for programmes like Enviro Quiz to success and different organisations or stakeholders were urged to come on board and support these young minds with brilliant ideas and entrepreneurship to save our environment.   

This event was put together by Destea in partnership with; Sasol, Department of education, Sun Windmill, Gariep Forever Resort and ABSA Bank and all participants and educators received various prizes from sponsors.
