Five people killed in collision in Hammarsdale

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the five people who lost their lives in a tragic head-on collision in the early hours of this morning 26 May 2009, at about 03h50 in Hammarsdale.

Preliminary reports have revealed a KZT bus from Hammarsdale collided head-on with a bakkie which had approximately six passengers, five of whom died on the scene (two children, two men and one female). The names of the deceased have not yet been released as authorities are still investigating.

Three other people sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Hammarsdale police are investigating a case of culpable homicide but at this point it is not clear who is going to be charged.

"I would like to convey my heartfelt condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident; however, we will make it our main priority to ensure the safety of all road users. I further urge all road users to be cautious at all times, and obey the rules of the road," said Cele.
