Five die and 18 seriously injured in North West accidents

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa, wishes to convey his condolences to the families of the five people who died in a head-on collision road accident involving a Sedan and a bakkie on the Wolmaranstad to Makwassie road on Sunday evening.

Paramedics had to use the Jaws of Life to free three bodies, i.e. the driver and two passengers from the wreckage of the Bantam bakkie which was from Makwassie towards Wolmaranstad.

The horrific accident occurred about five kilometres from Makwassie at around 09h30.

A passenger from the Hyundai Getz Sedan died after he was thrown out of the vehicle while the driver was trapped in the vehicle and burned to ashes in the accident. Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide.

Meanwhile, 18 people were admitted to Vryburg provincial hospital and a private hospital after sustaining serious injuries in an road accident on the Vryburg to Taung road on Monday afternoon around 12h25.

It is alleged that the driver of a Land Cruiser turned right near Tygerkloof in an unsafe manner before an oncoming taxi. The driver of the taxi tried to avoid the accident by moving onto the right lane but hit the Land Cruiser on the left as he avoided a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle. The taxi rolled several times before coming to a standstill.

MEC Yawa wishes the injured road users a speedy recovery. Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving against the driver of the Land Cruiser.
