Employment and Labour on appointment of Acting Director-General and changes in office of Minister Thulas Nxesi

Appointment of Employment and Labour Acting DG and changes in Minister TW Nxesi’s office

Minister TW Nxesi congratulated Dr Alec Moemi on his appointment as Director General (DG) of the Department of Human Settlements (DHS) and conveyed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr Alec Moemi for the hard work, commitment and professionalism he brought to the task of ensuring tangible progress within a short space of time in the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL). We remain indebted to him for his work and achievements here. Dr Moemi’s permanent appointment at the DHS necessitated urgent action by the Minister.

The permanent position of DEL DG remains vacant as the recruitment process is still in process. The Minister, acting in terms of his delegated responsibilities, his prerogative in terms of the Public Service laws and by virtue of Section 32 of the Public Service Act, No. 103 of 1994, as amended, has appointed Ms Onke Mjo as Acting DG from 01st January 2024 until the position is permanently filled. Prior to this, Ms Mjo was appointed on a short term 12 months’ contract as a Deputy Director General (DDG) in the office of the DG, in terms of the Public Services Act. She has a BA degree, Higher Diploma and Postgraduate (Honours) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and a senior Management Development Programme qualification from the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

She has served as Chief of Staff of the Ministry, after having been the Special Advisor to the Minister and having similar and additional experience in two other Ministries: Sport & Recreation and Public Works & Infrastructure. The role requires analytic astuteness, strategic thinking, and operational experience and capacity to ensure successful implementation. Ms Mjo served in several senior management positions (including Chief Director and DDG), at a strategic and operational level. Her experience in Sports Administration and event and project management, included serving on the FIFA Local Organising Committee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Acting DG will lead the Department in ensuring that current initiatives and programmes are carried through, guided by a clear Handover Report with measureable Action Plans based on the mandate and priorities of the Department.

Minister Nxesi also appointed Ms Albertina Barlow as the Chief of Staff and Ms Maphefo Mbatha as his Private Secretary. The former Spokesperson, Mr Sabelo Mali, has been appointed as a Director in the DEL communications directorate. The Minister will be announcing a new Spokesperson / Media Liaison Officer (MLO) soon to replace Mr Mali.

The Minister is working hard on ensuring stability at DEL and focusing the Department on delivering on its mandate. The Minister is committed to good governance and the stability of the Department. The newly appointed Acting DG will continue to focus on the fight against corruption and maladministration, and seek to strengthen performance and service delivery. In this, the Department is greatly assisted by its cooperation with the office of the Auditor General of SA (AGSA) and other law enforcement agencies.
