Electoral Commission on municipal ward by-elections

Results of the municipal by-elections held on 27 September 2017

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape, both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained the seats they won during the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The new councillor for the IFP is:

  • Thabane Penuel Mlotshwa in Ward 3 in the Endumeni Municipality – KZN241 – in KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 52.59% of the votes cast compared to 60.17% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 66.20%.

The new councillors for the ANC are:

  • Vincent Tsepo Nyambi in Ward 10 in the Nkomazi Municipality – MP324 – in Mpumalanga. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a slightly reduced margin of 86.14% of the votes cast compared to 87.61% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 44.56%.
  • Louna Stander in Ward 4 in the Dawid Kruiper Municipality – NC087 – in the Northern Cape. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a slightly reduced margin of 56.11% of the votes cast compared to 57.82% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 59.99%.
