Electoral Commission hosts Western Cape and Gauteng by-elections

During the by-elections contested yesterday in Gauteng and the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) won one seat and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained three seats and won one seat from the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The new ANC councillor is:

  • Liaquad Alley Mohamed Ebrahim in Ward 109 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB. The party won the seat over the DA who won the seat in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 51.15% of the votes cast compared to 50.08% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25.60%.

The new DA councillors are:

  • Stuart Iain Marais in Ward 54 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 68.59% of the votes cast compared to 65.72% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 20.35%.
  • Florence Cheryl Roberts in Ward 83 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 71.07% of the votes cast compared to 87.56% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 28.86%.
  • Lerato Magdeline Philiya Mphefo in Ward 112 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 46.82% of the votes cast compared to 46.08% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 14.52%.
  • Abraham Michael Pokwas in Ward 02 in Swellendam Municipality – WC034. The party won the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 57.91% of the votes cast compared to 48.06% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 71.23%.
