Electoral Commission on candidates contesting Municipal By-elections

Results of the municipal by-elections held on 27 September 2023

During the By-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and North West provinces, the African National Congress retained two (2) seats; while the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) each won a seat. 

 The new IFP councillor is:

  • Sibusiso Ndunakazi, in Ward 13 uMhlathuze Municipality– KZN282, KwaZulu-Natal. The party won a seat previously held by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 53,38% of the total votes cast compared to 63,32% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 64,85%.

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Mokgadi Jennet Molokomme, in Ward 11 Blouberg Municipality – LIM351. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 64,84% of the total votes cast, compared to 84,51% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 49,24%  
  • Keaobaka Remembrance Sefike, in Ward 03 Madibeng Municipality – NW372 North West. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 85,86% of the total votes cast, compared to 62,78% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 37,95%. 

The new EFF councillor is:

  • Lehlohonolo Metoa, in Ward 3 in Maquassi Hills Municipality – NW404, North West. The party won a seat previously held by the ANC after the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 46,89% of the total votes cast, compared to 64,17% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 54,42%.
