Electoral Commission on candidates contesting municipal by-elections on 13 December 2023

Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 13 December 2023 

Four (4) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 13 December 2023.
 
The by-elections will be contested by 15 candidates from seven (7) political parties. 
 
Gauteng
 
•    Ward 17 in the Rand West City Municipality – GT485, will be contested by three (3) candidates. 1. Thapelo David Lerothodi of the African National Congress (ANC); 2. Delton Baloyi of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and 3. Andile Msimang of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).  
 
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was  32,08%.
 
 
KwaZulu-Natal

 
•    Ward 101 in the EThekwini Municipality – ETH, will be contested by five (5) candidates; 1. Bonisile Eric Baleni, of the African Freedom Revolution. 2. Simphiwe Mlungisi Khanyile of the ANC, 3. Likho Hlophe of the African Transformation Movement (ATM), 4. Mduduzi Dlamini of the EFF and 5. Mandlenkosi Knowledge Ntshangase of the IFP. 
 
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the expulsion of the councilor by the MEC. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 32,43%.
 
 
•    Ward 23 Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN216, will be contested by four (4) candidates. 1. Thobile Happiness Ntaka of the AFR; 2. Bheki Wiseman Cele of the ANC. 3. Jerome Andile Cimela of the EFF and 4. Phumla Tracy Mncwabe of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
 
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 32,43%.
 
 
•    Ward 11 in the iNkosi Langalibalele Municipality – KZN216, will be contested by three (3) candidates; 1. Mbuso Sinqobile Shelembe of the ANC, 2. Sbonelo Sibusiso Sithole of the EFF, 3. Sanele Cedric Madlala of the IFP. 
 
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 49,85%.
