Electoral Commission on candidates contesting municipal by-elections on 11 October 2023

Six (6) municipal ward by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga, North West and the Northern Cape provinces on Wednesday, 11 October 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by 2 Independent candidates and 25 party candidates from nine (9) political parties.

In Mpumalanga

  • Ward 13 in the Msukaligwa Municipality – MP302, will be contested by three candidates, 1. Mbalenhle Faith Portia Khumalo of the African Christian Democratic Party (ADCP); 2. Esther Rosa Shabangu of the African National Congress (ANC) and 3. Siphiwe Florence Ngwenya of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 26,38%. 

In North West

  • Ward 16 in the Matlosana Municipality – NW403, will be contested by four (4) candidates. 1. Dominique Takang of the ANC; 2. Jacqeline - Anne Basson of the Democratic Alliance (DA); 3. Mantshabele Martha Moremi of the Economic Freedom Fighters in the Free State and 4. Lee-Aan Scott four of the Vryheidsfront Plus (VF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 60,77%.

  • Ward 17 in the Matlosana Municipality – NW403, will be contested by four candidates. 1. Phakoe Horizon Moleko of the ANC; 2. Abraham Gerhardus Strydom of the DA, 3. Tshepo Cecil Magome of the EFF and 4. Chandré De Bruyn of the VF Plus.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 61,66%.

In Northern Cape

  • Ward 06 in the Siyancuma Municipality – NC078, will be contested by one Independent candidate, Kabelo Abram Balepile and two political party candidates,1. Mabel Gadimelwe Tau of the ANC and 2. Rebaone Clementine Molemo of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections 47,29%.

  • Ward 03 in the Kai !Garib Municipality – NC082, will be contested by six candidates,1. Jesica Sarah White of the ANC, 2. Anelma Steenkamp of the DA; 3. Phumudzo Christo Meintjies of the EFF ; 4. Lucas Van Rooyen of the Hope for the Future, 5. Laurica Vannesa Rooi of the Municipal Residents Movement and 6. Gurswin Aldridge Galant of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).                      

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 60,44%.

  • Ward 01 in the Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091, will be contested by one independent candidate, 1.Stoffel Stanley Martins and six (6) political candidates. 1. Gordon David Adams of the ACDP, 2. Osia Mangumbu of the ANC, 3. Mary-Ann Louis Jansen of the Build One South Africa (BOSA), 4. Jocelyn Deltadawn Hart of the DA, 5. Samuel Baatlhodi Mogoje of the EFF, and 6. Johan Loff of the PA.                       

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 56,38%.
