Ekurhuleni dedicates its public facilities to celebrating Mandela's legacy

The City of Ekurhuleni encourages its residents to continue celebrating the life and legacy of President Nelson Mandela at various venues where the global icon is commemorated through speech, song, poetry and dance.

Whilst Germiston Lake, Dries Niemandt Park in Kempton Park, Sinaba stadium in Daveyton, and Katlehong Stadium will no longer host the Mandela commemorative events, the rest of the venues, will however remain active to accommodate mourners in Ekurhuleni.

The revised venues to commemorate the monumental life of South Africa’s first democratic President include:

  • Kwenele Park in Katlehong
  • Bulithando Park in Kwa-Thema
  • Ethafeni Park in Tembisa
  • Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa
  • Germiston City hall -  (for signing the book of condolences, laying of wreathes and prayer)
  • Kempton Park Civic Hall - (for signing the book of condolences, laying of wreathes and prayer)
  • Kwa-Thema Civic Hall – (for signing the book of condolences, laying of wreathes and prayer)

Meanwhile, the City has also arranged 20 buses to ferry residents to the Union Buildings in Tshwane free of charge tomorrow, December 13 to pay homage to the international icon ahead of the funeral on Sunday, 15 December.

Clearly marked busses will depart from nine different pick up -points for Tshwane at 07h00. They will return from 17h00.

The pick-up points are as follows:

  • Daveyton Mall -Daveyton;
  • Kwa-Thema Civic Centre -Kwa-Thema;
  • Faranani Multi-Purpose Centre -Tsakane
  • Phomolong Pay-point -Tembisa
  • Tembisa Plaza -Tembisa
  • Lesedi Shopping Mall - Vosloorus, DH William Hall-Katlehong, Benoni and Germiston Parliamentary Constituency Offices (PCOs)

NB: The address for Germiston PCO is 235 Meyer Street and the Benoni PCO is located at number 86 Elston Avenue.
