Drunk drivers arrested in Mangaung

Free State Traffic officers arrested 18 drunk drivers during a routine law enforcement operation in Mangaung recently. The law enforcement operation was conducted at various streets around Mangaung by the Provincial Traffic officers together with members of the South African Police Service.

During the same operation, 40 vehicles were discontinued because they were not road worthy. 105 fines were issued for various offences committed by motorists. During the launch of 2013 Festive Season Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign in Kroonstad, the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport honourable Butana Komphela stated that “Law abiding road users can expect a smile and even a friendly handshake from our law enforcement officers, but those who deliberately disobey road rules will face the full might of the law as we are unleashing Law Enforcement Operations never seen before”.

We hope the arrests of these drunk drivers will send a very strong message to all road users that lawlessness will not be tolerated in the Free State and we are also hoping that it will encourage them not to indulge in dangerous activities such as speeding, drinking and driving, overtaking where it is dangerous, driving un-roadworthy vehicles and overloading.

Finally, the Department of Police, Roads and Transport would like to remind road users that Road Safety is the responsibility of all South Africans; the success of the Road Safety Education will undoubtedly depend on the role played by all stakeholders. The department alone cannot win this battle, no matter how much resources are invested into the Road Safety education.
