Drivers' delight

Drivers in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro are delighted about the new integrated transport systems introduced by the municipality. Local taxi drivers and private motorists jointly threw their weight behind the new system which saw a special lane for public transport operators, including trucks, separating them from the rest of the traffic in the centre.

The new integrated public transport system special lane runs across the Govan Mbeki Street from the city centre to the newly built Nelson Mandela stadium and surrounding communities.

Given the Nelson Mandela Bay's automotive and other industrial capacity, huge volumes of traffic inspired the council to instigate plans to ensure efficient service for all.

According to Traffic Officer, Elizabeth Burgess, some local motorists were happy that minibus taxis have been taking on off the normal lane.

"They say the streets are more quite without the taxi drivers pressurising them all the time," said Burgess.

Local Taxi Driver, Lucky Nkwinti said: "the new special lane for us is nice, better and more efficient. I really enjoy it".

On the other hand, fellow motorist, Thamsanqa Gazi, said he has no problem with the new system.

"It makes it easy for all of us to drive in the city centre. I love it," said Gazi.

For Sakina Miller, the new system is good and works perfectly for pedestrians, motorists and traffic officers.

Members of the public are urged to obey the rules of the road by following the special signs that have been erected in and around the bay, take note of the robots along the integrated public transport system lane and other normal streets when driving and also be vigilant when driving so as to reduce accidents.
