A door of hope opens for Els Park Community in Ekurhuleni

The MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko today launched another Green Door at Els Park as part of ensuring that the service is extended to 805 wards of Gauteng.

This Green Door will go a long way to reduce the distance victims of gender based violance has to travel to go and report a case at a local police station.

Applauding the selflessness of the safety volunteers who open not only their hearts but their doors to victims of gender based violence, MEC Mazibuko appeals to the general public to do same “only if community members could join hands, South Africa will enjoy full women emancipation” said MEC Mazibuko.

In these Green doors a woman will receive counselling and accommodation for a period of three to four  hours whilst the department will be looking for a placement in safe houses such as Ikhaya Lethemba, a one stop centre for abused women and children offering accommodation, medico-legal assistance such as court preparation etc.

Further four Green doors will be launched in Khutsong, Kagiso, Sokhulumi and Ekangala. This will bring a total of 28 Green doors located on ward base level to relieve long distance travel to a local police station by a woman in distress.
