Department condemns xenophobic attacks

The Director-General of the Department of Military Veterans, Mr Tsepe Motumi condemns the ongoing xenophobic attacks as criminal, despicable and shameful. He has called on the Military Veterans’ community to condemn and join hands with the rest of South Africans in bringing this diabolical acts to an immediate end.

“We strongly condemn these outrageous acts of xenophobic attacks against fellow Africans, including the destruction of property and loss of life. The fact that these criminal acts are meted out against fellow Africans in particular renders them very shameful. Our African brothers and sisters sacrificed their all, including providing refuge and shelter to South African Military Veterans that fought for freedom and democracy. It is also these fellow Africans, who were prepared to pay the ultimate price in bringing about the 21 years of democracy that we all now enjoy. We therefore call on the entire Military Veterans ‘community, to join hands in condemning in most strongest terms these acts of xenophobia and to join hands with all peace loving South Africans in helping stem out these violent attacks from our communities” said Mr Motumi.

These violent attacks have thus far left no less than 7 people dead, scores injured as well as destruction of property across many parts of the country.

“Military Veterans’ are urged to provide their full support and cooperation to law enforcement agencies to stem out these acts of violence and criminality in our communities,” said the Director-General.
