Director-General of the province, Dr Sibongile Muthwa, issues a notice to step down when contract ends

As the Director-General of the Eastern Cape Provincial Administration, I wish to announce that I have issued a notice to step down when my contract comes to an end later this year in October 2010. I have informed the Honourable Premier that I will not be seeking renewal or extension of my contract when it expires. I believe it is time for me to explore new opportunities and different challenges.

The Honourable Premier has accepted my decision.

The decision to give timely notice of my departure will allow space for the Eastern Cape government to attract a successor of requisite talent, thus enabling seamless continuity.

I wish to thank the Honourable Premier and the provincial government for the opportunity afforded to me to serve government and the people of the province for what will be a period of six years in October 2010. It has been a unique honour and privilege to serve in this office and I believe that, supported by a team of committed managers, I have discharged my duties with integrity fitting of this position.

I thank all members of the Executive Council I have worked with during my tenure as Director-General, as well as my colleagues in the administration for providing an enabling environment for carrying forward the developmental project of our government. Also, during the period I have served, the Portfolio Committees of the Legislature exercised judicious oversight over our work, for which I am grateful, as it contributed significantly to good governance in the province.

Much still remains to be done to transform the livelihoods of the majority of the provincial population. I therefore wish our government and the leadership of the Eastern Cape well in this endeavour.
