The meeting received presentations from various government departments on their draft close out reports, focusing on observations and lessons learnt.
All draft reports will be tabled at the next IMC meeting end of September. The meeting noted that all guarantees agreed on by government had been honoured.
As announced by President Jacob Zuma at the post World Cup briefing and post the July Lekgotla, the IMC, through its chair, Deputy President Motlanthe, will present a government close-out report to cabinet before the end of this year.
The intention of the report is to document the legacy of the tournament and the implementation of lessons learnt from the hosting of the tournament and also how government coordinated its efforts to deliver services needed for the successful hosting of the event.
The lessons learnt will also seek to guide government towards the achievement of its five priorities and outcomes as part of the government programme of action.
Amongst several lessons learnt the meeting highlighted the following:
• The management and coordination of the public transport system both ground and air transport
• The management, coordination and implementation of security and policing plans with other sectors for optimum pro-active intervention
• The non-politicised intergovernmental co-ordination lead by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) needs to be maintained
• Specialised skills, especially project management skills must be harnessed, retained and transferred in all spheres of government with greater focus on local government
• Establishment of special courts should inform the process currently underway of the revamping of the justice system
Successful branding of South Africa, will in the long term improve tourism and investment opportunities.
The meeting also instructed the Technical Coordinating Committee, chaired by Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Nhlanhla Nene to lead the process of consolidating the report that will tell the story around the legacy of the tournament across sports, culture and education.
The IMC is expected to have concluded the report by October and presented to Cabinet and Parliament.
Deputy President Motlanthe reaffirmed government’s commitment in radically implementing lessons learnt to ensure we deliver a better life for South Africans.
