Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Advocate Michael Masutha visits Rustenburg schools on maths and science education

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Advocate Michael Masutha is in Rusternburg in the North West today, promoting Mathematics and Science in high schools in the area. Advocate Masutha’s started at HF Tlou High School and President Mangope High School both in Tlhabane. He will also visit the Royal Bafokeng High School in Phokeng.

The 2013 matric pass rate in mathematics and physical science showed a slight increase compared to 2012. South Africa is under pressure to produce much-needed science and technology skills for research and development purposes and the number of Grade 12 graduates in mathematics and physical science is crucial in achieving this.

The maths pass rate for the matric class of 2013 increased from 54% in 2012 to 59.1% and in physical science from 61.3% to 67%. However, a much higher pass rate is needed if South Africa is to improve its global economic competitiveness. Advocate Masutha is encouraging teachers and learners to work harder in these subjects.

He is accompanied by education officials in the district and Ms Lerato Molebatsi who is manager of the North West University Science Centre in Mafikeng, who will highlight the importance of science centres in the learning and teaching of these subjects.

The Deputy Minister will also visit schools in Limpopo.
