Deputy Minister calls for quality

Human Settlements Deputy Minister Ms Zou Kota–Fredericks has called for quality assurance on the People’s Housing Process programmes (PHP).

“A golden thread running through all our initiatives is consultation and community involvement for community development. As government we plan to work closely with communities and relevant PHP stakeholders in ensuring that this is achieved and that all these entities are focused on quality and that they follow and adhere to the appropriate design models including the set norms and standards,” said the \deputy minister.

She was addressing more than 200 delegates from government, NGOs and CBOs gathered in Pretoria for two days to engage on challenges hindering  the implementation of the programme and jointly come up with recommendations on how to up-scale PHP nationally.

The PHP programme encourages the community to initiate and drive the human settlement delivery process thereby empowering individuals with skills to maximise their housing subsidies by building their own homes.

There are currently more than 30 PHP projects running in the country and about 4000 units will be built upon their completion. The conference will also be discussing access to funding and well located land for PHP programmes.

Ms Zou Kota-Fredericks also applauded communities that have successfully implemented the programmes by constructing bigger and good quality units.

“PHP houses must be big, and must have big windows. Minister Sexwale put emphasis on big windows even on BNG houses. Greening of houses and energy efficiency is critical,” said the deputy minister.
