Department of Women on Bongekile 'Babes Wodumo' Simelane abuse video

Burden of reply should not be on victims of abuse – Response to Babes Wodumo video

The Department of Women became aware of a video circulating on social media platforms which depicts Bongekile Simelane (Stage name: Babes Wodumo) being physically abused by her longterm partner Mandla Maphumulo (Commonly known as Mampintsha).

The Department has been at work speaking to various government departments to ensure this case receives prompt attention on the basis of the video evidence. The department has also spoken to the Gender Based Violence Command Centre to have Social Workers and Counselling Services made available should Ms Simelane request it.

Furthermore, the Department is outraged at responses on social media, laying blame at the feet of Ms Simelane for not stepping forward soon enough to open a case. “Ms Babes Wodumo has suffered physical and emotional trauma at the hands of her intimate partner. This is someone she loves and trusts. For society to lay the burden of reply at her feet is discouraging,” said Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Women, Ms Bathabile Dlamini. Minister Dlamini went on to add that it should be Mampintsha who hands himself over to the Police as he has to account for his actions.

As soon as this video surfaced, it became the responsibility of every citizen to report the matter to the Police. In terms of the Domestic Violence Act, a neighbour, friend, or family cannot look away when they are aware of someone being abused. “Every citizen has a responsibility to the victim in any case of abuse,” said Minister Dlamini.

The department also takes strong exception to sectors of society who are defending Mampintsha’s actions by downplaying the video as a publicity stunt to raise awareness for an upcoming music video. This is a morally deplorable attempt at a cover-up and should be dismissed with contempt.

During the Department’s tabling of the Budget Vote, as well as the Debate on the State of the Nation Address Minister Dlamini has celebrated Ms Simelane’s bravery in speaking out about her abuse.

“As Ms Simelane has now reported this case, South Arica can rest assured that government will activate all services available to victims of gender-based violence,” added Minister Dlamini.

The Department encourages women to speak out and report abuse as part of the #HearMeToo campaign.
