Department unveils Gauteng 2010 transport readiness plans

With more than just one month left before the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup kick-off, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is working on finalising transport plans for the tournament.

This is done in partnership with the host and non-host cities, rail service providers and other road entities in the province.

The department is working on delivering the following: road infrastructure, route determination, installation of flags participating in the event, navigational signage and issuing permits and branding public transport modes such as buses, metered and minibus taxis amongst others.

The department has processed more than 1 619 applications for special operating licenses received from minibus taxis, bus companies, tourist, shuttle, charter transport service operators as well as metered taxis.

Rail service is seen as a backbone of public transport as it will play a major part as a mass mover of fans during match days, free of charge. There will be eight dedicated trains for matches in Tshwane (Loftus Versfeld stadium) and a further 10 for Johannesburg (Ellis Park and Soccer City).

The other transport service modes, with the exception of Metrorail, will be running a commercial service where spectators will be expected to pay for transport to and from the match venues.

The production of the 2010 travel guide will provide information covering match venues, different modes of transport that can be utilised to get to different destinations within the province, the location of public viewing areas and other areas of interest.

The planning and coordination of these and other activities is aimed at ensuring that the province plays its part in hosting an unforgettable football tournament. This will ensure the effective integration of rail, air and road transportation for the benefit of spectators as well as people of Gauteng.
