The department pursues green transport

As part of the Gauteng integrated energy strategy, the department is partnering private sector research institutions to undertake research on the use of environmentally friendly alternative energy sources. These include the use of compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and biodiesel.

A project steering committee and a working group have been constituted to drive the Green Transport Research project. The steering committee comprises representatives from the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI), g-Fleet and CNG Technology (Pty) Ltd.

The objectives of the research project are to gather credible data and evidence on:

  • energy efficiency through vehicle performance
  • cost effectiveness and
  • levels of greenhouse gas emissions

The research project involves the conversion of 12 vehicles enabling them to use compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and biodiesel and have them examined and monitored over a period of time.

The project is anticipated to run until the end of September 2010. The results will be compared to those of petrol and diesel from which recommendations on the way forward will be made.
