Department of Labour boost unemployed youth

In its quest to curb unemployed and reduce the number of workseekers the Gauteng Department of Labour funded the Public Lighting Project where 48 unemployed people sourced from Department of Labour’s database of work seekers completed various electrical courses and were placed in 12 depots of City of Tshwane upon completion of their training.

Public Lighting project is an initiative of City of Tshwane to train unemployed youth. The training commenced in February 2010 and ended on 15 July 2010 in Silvertondale, Pretoria. The minimum requirement was N2 in electrification course.

Marry Maunatlala who was unemployed before is among the 48 unemployed people who received training at Industries Education and Training Institute (IETI) and she was thrilled with the training. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime. The interesting part is that we are assured jobs,’” said Maunatlala. She is one of the seven trainees placed in Rosslyn Depot.

Amongst other courses received by the trainees are: electrical heavy current installation works, electrical construction operator, electrical distribution operator and electrical heavy current, electrical cables.

The department funded the project through National Skills Fund. The function has since moved to Department of Higher Education and Training. Trainees were paid a monthly allowance while attending the course.

The Budget was R1 125 750.00. This is a huge investment that we have undertaken not only to improve the skills levels of the country’s labour force but also to realise government’s overall objective of ensuring decent work for South African workers.

The project is evidence of yet another step that shows our commitment to working towards minimising joblessness and poverty in the country.
