Department of Labour appoints a presiding inspector to set-up a formal hearing on the doomed Tongaat mall

The Department of Labour (DoL) has announced the appointment of a presiding inspector to help set-up a formal hearing that will get into the bottom of what happened during the Tongaat mall disaster.

Department of Labour Deputy Director General of Inspection and Enforcement Services, Thobile Lamati said DoL's Deputy Director: Civil and Construction Sector, Phumi Maphaha has been appointed to head a Section 32 hearing.

The Section 32 hearing is usually appointed by the Department of Labour against parties whose negligence results in occupational injuries and death of workers. The appointment of the presiding inspector (Maphaha) comes on the heals of Tuesday's collapse of a Tongaat shopping mall that left one person dead and 29 others injured.

Maphaha is expected to begin his work next week. He will first meet with the legal representatives of various stakeholders affected by the tragedy to thrash out modalities on how a formal hearing will proceed.

"As we speak now labour inspectors have taken control of the accident site and are gathering evidence," Lamati said.
