Department of Labour adds another feather in its cap with the SAIGA Award for best annual report

The Southern African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) has bestowed the Department of Labour (DoL) with the 2013 best report award leaving in its wake other national departments in the pursuit of excellence in the Departmental Annual Reports award.

The Department of Labour took pole position when it clocked a score of 95,46% in the national departments category, which averaged 88,41%. The best report of a national department award is one among a number issued by the SAIGA in recognition of compliance with statutory performance reporting requirements of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and the Treasury Regulations.

The SAIGA awards were launched 12 years ago by the organisation in the public sector to recognise the pursuit of excellence in annual reports published by provincial and national departments. The awards are called the SAIGA Annual Public Sector Reporting Awards.

To ensure total independence from the executive and the finance departments, the awards are managed and administered by the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors with the support and co-operation of the Accountant-General as well as the Auditor-General. Additional quality assurance is done by the Department of Auditing, University of Pretoria.

The Award Panel and the Technical Award Committee is constituted from experts in the field of public sector reporting, representatives of the office of the Accountant-General, the Office of the Auditor-General, academia and SAIGA.

Department of Labour Director-General Nkosinathi Nhleko said being ahead of other departments does not mean, “we can rest on our laurels, but this puts more pressure to do even better”.

The award also coincided with the department’s announcement that it had posted yet another healthy audit report.

SAIGA executive director Professor Dieter Gloeck said: “Your department’s performance underscores its commitment to effective and accountable reporting and I have no doubt the Awards will reflect very positively on your department”.

Meanwhile, to celebrate the recognition bestowed, the Department of Labour will in a partnership with SAIGA host a gala dinner in which the department will be presented with a framed certificate and a trophy.

Media is invited to attend a gala dinner which will be held at Irene Country Lodge in Centurion. The occasion will be held on 17 October 2013. It will start at 18h30 for 19h00.
