Department honours women

The special programmes unit of the department commemorated Women’s Month by celebrating with general assistants and having a farewell function for those who had already left the department at the Roji Skenjana Hall on 4 September 2009.

The aim of the celebration was mainly to make women feel their importance in society and at the same time gather together as women in trying to find solutions to the challenges facing women, which range from poverty to abuse.

The first part of the programme included speakers from different programmes within the department where different topics like MDR and XDR TB, HIV and AIDS were under discussion.

Manager for Special Programmes Ms Khepukazi Mjamba called on women over the age of 25 to get them tested for cervical cancer as early detection leads to better treatment.

Acting Superintended General Mr Phumzile Zitumane told the hall packed with women the major roles they continue to play, “we’re here to celebrate the women of the department especially those who have retired and those who have since passed on”, the Acting SG said.

Zitumane sent out a call to human resource to speed up pension processes for pensioners; however he assured them that the department was working tirelessly on making sure pensioners do not have to come looking for their pension payouts.
