Department of Health welcomes Department of International Development (DFID) assistance in the fight against AIDS

The Department of Health welcomes the support made in an announcement by the British Minister for International Development that his country will help South Africa to buy additional condoms as part of efforts to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS. DFID will assist in providing 42 million condoms as part of a broader approach to scaling up HIV treatment and treatment.

The announcement came as an emergency meeting was held in Westminster late yesterday, 9 March 2010 to re-energise global efforts to tackle HIV and AIDS. This announcement comes at the time when health department is scaling up its efforts to combat the spread of HIV in the country. In accepting the global fund report this past Monday in Johannesburg, the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi stressed the need for more emphasis to be placed on prevention.

In few weeks' time South Africa will be hosting the FIFA Soccer World Cup and this assistance will further boost the country’s readiness to provide for the healthcare needs of thousands of soccer fans expected to come into the country during the month-long tournament.
