Department and stakeholders build houses on Mandela Day

In celebration of former President Nelson Mandela’s 92nd birthday, the Department of Human Settlements together with the Govan Mbeki Municipality spent 67 minutes of their time to improve the lives of the poor and needy people throughout the province. Four elderly beneficiaries will soon be proud owners of new houses built on Mandela Day as declared by the United Nations and supported by all countries and stakeholders in society.

The department in the province will build 27 houses in different areas of the province to assist the poor, the aged and needy. This honour for Mandela will continue every year and is expected to improve the lives of the poor by building houses for them. The Mandela Day activities were initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 organisation.

The department, Govan Mbeki Municipality and other stakeholders, including a local contractor, played a big role in improving the lives of the families. The campaign saw the MEC for the Department of Human Settlements Mr Madala Masuku leading a team of officials to get their hands dirty in actually building the houses. MEC Madala Masuku said that the collaboration and cooperation in housing delivery has proved to be a working solution to reducing the housing backlog in the province.

“We must continue to work together as government, districts and local municipalities and all stakeholders involved in providing housing to the needy and do more for our destitute families in our communities”. The campaign saw the cutting of a cake by MEC Masuku and Mayor Sipho Nkosi dedicated to Mandela and the few elderly beneficiaries that were at the event. The houses are being built at extension 18, eMbalenhle Township. MEC Masuku has declared the 2010/11 financial year to people with disabilities.

The construction of project will benefit the youth, the elderly, women, child-headed households and war people with disabilities.
