Department acts against fraud and corruption

In an effort to tighten financial controls and to curb corruption, Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has this week precautionary suspended a senior Emergency Services official pending an investigation into the allegations of fraud and misconduct relating to irregular procurement practices.

In its quest to eradicate fraud and corruption, the department also hopes to recover over R1 million from other 27 department employees who are suspected of being in conflict of interest. The allegations are that they failed to disclose their business interests where they are directors of companies. These companies turn to benefit financially from department tenders awarded to them.

Also under investigation is an non-governmental organisation (NGO) funded by the department and receives grants from South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Takalani Home for Mentally Disabled in Diepkloof, Soweto. Earlier this month, the department obtained a court interdict to force the board to step down. Currently, the Avril Elizabeth Home has been appointed as the interim administrator of the home until a forensic investigation by the department has been completed.

MEC Qedani Mahlangu said, “The department is not going to hesitate to take stern measures against any employee who is found guilty of misusing funds that are meant to improve the lives of the citizens of Gauteng.”
