Decade of action for road safety in full swing in the Free State

Free State law enforcement officers turned their focus to implementation of  the Decade of Action for Road Safety in October when they made their presence felt in all major roads in the Province during October Transport Month Campaign. Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign is a global declaration of war against irresponsible driving leading to road crashes.

Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 -2020 was launched in more than 100 countries including South Africa last year with the aim of preventing five million road traffic deaths globally by 2020. Since its inception, Free State Department of Police, Roads & Transport has successfully ensured implementation of Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign throughout the province.

Massive law enforcement operations were conducted by traffic officers and members of the South African Police Service last month as a rehearsal for festive season Decade of Action for Road Safety. During these operations a total of 65 955 vehicles were searched, 12 768 fines were issued, 88 drivers were tested for alcohol and 9014 trucks were checked for overload at the weigh bridges.

Sixty four drivers were arrested for speeding. The highest speed recorded was 234 km/h on N1 north near Glen. The driver was driving a BMW. He was released on a R2000 bail and will appear in court soon. Six motorists were also arrested for driving under influence of alcohol.
