Death on Tuesday (yesterday) of Yvonne Makume, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works, Roads and Transport; North West

In a spontaneous outpour of grief, North West Premier, Maureen Modiselle and her Executive Committee today express shock at the death of one of their own, Yvonne Makume, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works, Roads and Transport.

Rubbing salt into the wound, a specially convened meeting of the provincial cabinet heard that Makume was working on the funeral arrangements of her brother who died earlier on this week in Carletonville.

North West MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng, said he spoke to Makume hours before her death when she broke to him the news about the death and funeral arrangements for her brother.

"What a double tragedy for the Makume family," remarked Mahlakeng.

Makume died in car accident on Tuesday in Potchefstroom, apparently on her way back from the sitting at the North West provincial legislature. The cause of the accident is yet to be established.

"Yvonne, like many colleagues serving on various committees in the legislature, was passionate about her role oversight role. Her robust approach, along with that of her committee, in digging out the truth facts, earned her a lot of respect among colleagues," said Modiselle.

Makume will be buried in Khuma location, Stilfontein, near Klerksdorp. The cortege leaves home at 06h00 from house N 2435, Makgale Street.

Meanwhile, arrangements for a memorial service in Mafikeng were yet to be finalised by late today (Wednesday).
