Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission condemns 'pig head’ incident

The Commission for Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission), a Chapter 9 Institution established to strengthen Constitutional democracy, condemns, with strong possible terms, the use of religious symbolism to resolve conflicts.  The CRL Rights Commission is concerned with COSAS’s offensive actions with regards to 'pig’s head' incident, as the issue impacts on religious rights of individuals/communities whom pork is not part of their diet.

The CRL Rights Commission is tasked with amongst others promotion and protection of religious rights of communities. The CRL Act empowers us to promote awareness among the youth of South Africa on diversity of cultural, religious and linguistic communities and their rights. We believe that the CRL Rights Commission is well placed to mediate and advice on matters such as this through engaging and educating youth about religious rights of various communities.

From the point of view of respect, we appeal for religious tolerance. The CRL Rights Commission believes that South Africa, through its Constitutional values promotes peace, tolerance and unity.
