Correctional Services welcomes Labour Court judgment

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) welcomes the judgment handed down in the Labour Court of South Africa in Cape Town today (18 October). Correctional Services Acting National Commissioner, Ms. Nontsikelelo Jolingana, said this judgment affirms the preamble of our Constitution.

“As stated by the Judge of the Labour Court, the Honourable H.Rabkin-Naicker, the preamble to our Constitution enjoins us all to be guided by the following principles:
‘We, the people of South Africa,
Recognise the injustices of our past;
Honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land:
Respect those who have worked to build and develop our country; and
Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity…’

“DCS will appoint a team to review its policies with respect to implementation of the Employment Equity Act, as directed by the court. In the process, DCS will consult with organised labour and engage with the Departments of Labour and Public Service and Administration,” Ms. Jolingana said.
